1. (Purpose) These instructions are aimed to stipulate the matters on submission of research paper to the “Clean Technology” (Journal) that is published in accordance with Article 4 of the Articles of the Korean Society of Clean Technology (KSCT).
2. (Scope) Research papers submitted to the Journal should deal with theories and applied manufacturing technologies based on clean technology, as well as clean energy or environmental technology. Papers should not have been published in any another academic journal before being submitted to the Journal.
3. (To quote other materials) If the author wishes to quote tables, figures or other materials used in other paper(s) published previously in another academic journal, the author should obtain the written permission to use those materials from the corresponding author or the publisher of the paper before submitting the papers to the Journal, and provide accurate citations for the quoted materials.
4. (Language) ① In principle, manuscripts must be submitted in Korean or English.
   ② When research paper is written in Korean, it shall be required to refrain from using English in the text but to use Korean as much as possible. However, terminology in English may be used together. If English is used by necessity, words shall all be in small letters. If an English word starts a sentence, only the first letter of the word shall be in capital letter.
   ③ In research papers, scientific names such as name of microorganism and words that are italicized in the dictionary such as “in situ”, “in vitro”, etc. shall be written in italics.
5. (Online submission) ① Online receipt is the basic rule for paper submission. Papers should be provided in a Hangul or MS Word file. Please ensure that you observe the guidelines suggested in the “Manuscript Sample”, which is downloadable from www.cleantech.or.kr, before submitting to the Journal via the Paper Submission and Review System (PS&R System) accessible from the homepage of the KSCT.
   ② All authors are required to declare compliance with ethical standards and also disclose potential conflicts of interest including any financial or personal relationships.
6. (Received and accepted dates) The “received date” is assumed to be the date on which a manuscript is submitted via the PS&R System accessible from the homepage of the KSCT, while the “accepted date“ is assumed to be the date on which the final review process is finished.
7. (Publication) Publication of the submitted manuscript is decided based on the result of the review stipulated in the 「Peer Review Process」 of the KSCT.
8. (Manuscript Categories) The Journal publishes the following 5 types of manuscripts:
   (1) Review: An article that sums up research trends and research results in a specific area, and should be written in close consultation with the Editor-in-Chief with regard to topic and review area.
   (2) Article: A paper containing original research results that include valuable conclusions or facts, and the length of the paper is limited to 40 pages as A4 size (21 × 29.7 cm), including tables and figures.
   (3) Short communication: A paper including research results the author wishes to publish promptly, and the length of the paper is limited to 8 pages, including tables and figures.
   (4) Letter to the editor: An article containing a third party’s opinions on a published paper, or a response by the author to expressed opinions, as well as opinions on the editorial direction, and the length of the paper is limited to 2 pages.
   (5) Erratum: The amendment of mistakes introduced by the publisher in editing or production, including errors of omission (erratum) or the correction of important errors by the author(s) (corrigendum) for previously published paper.
9. (Title page) ① In the title page of the manuscript, title, author’s name(s), organization, and address should be written in Korean or English. If in Korean, their English must be written below in Korean as shown in the “Manuscript Sample” of the homepage of the KSCT.
   ② The title should convey the conceptual signification of the paper to a broad readership. In the English title, the first letter of all words shall be written in capital letter excluding conjunction, article and preposition.
   ③ First and last names of all authors should be listed together below the title with superscript of an asterisk (*) for corresponding author and separated by commas. Multiple affiliations should be marked with superscript Arabic numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.) after the last of each author’s name. Please check the author names carefully, as we cannot amend or correct this section after the manuscript is accepted.
   ④ The affiliated institution are to be listed directly below the names of the authors. For multiple affiliations, the corresponding superscript number should be written in front of the first letter of each affiliation. Then postal address of affiliation must be written on new line immediately below the affiliated institute. Affiliation must reflect the organization(s) supporting the author(s) while the research was done. If the current affiliated organization of the author is different from the affiliated organization when research was conducted, the current affiliated organization and address shall be written in the footnote. In marking of the English address of author, abbreviation such as “Dept.” shall not be used. Instead, the address shall be written in full text: for example, “Department.”
   ⑤ The corresponding author(s) should also be identified along with a current, valid e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers. The corresponding author(s) is responsible for ensuring adherence to all editorial and submission policies and for any communications and actions that may be necessary after publication. Because of the responsibilities associated with this designation, a maximum of two corresponding authors is allowed. However, one corresponding author should be designated in the PS&R System.
10. (Abstract) ① A one-paragraph abstract in Korean or English should be provided in the manuscript. In English, the abstract should be a 200 to 300 words with 3 to 5 keywords. In Korean, the abstract should be no longer than a 500 character with 3 to 5 keywords. If the abstract is in Korean, the English translation should also be written below.
    ② The abstract should describe the main objective(s) of the study, explain how the study was done, including any approaches/models used and summarize the most important results and their significance.
    ③ In the abstract, minimize the use of abbreviations and do not cite reference.
11. (Main body) Research paper must consist of the sequence of Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, etc. However, according to authors’ preference, the main body in the manuscript can be organized as best suits the research.
12. (Reference section) ① Every reference cited in the text should present in the reference list (and vice versa), they must be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals in the order in which they are referred to in the text.
    ② Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the reference list, but may be mentioned in parentheses in the text with name(s) of the source(s) and the year. Authors should request permission from the source to cite unpublished data.
    ③ As a minimum, website are referenced with the full URL and the date when the reference was last accessed, and as much other information as is available. Access date is important as website can be updated and URLs may change. The date accessed can be later than the acceptance date of the paper, and the month and year accessed should be given at the least.
    ④ References should be written in English as shown below in the following order: author’s name, “Paper Title,” journal title, volume (issue), page extents (publication date). Title of journal can be expressed in a widely-used short form.

13. (In-text citations) ① Citations in the text should be written as shown below, and must be written in English:
    Single author: Williams [1]
    Two authors: Kim and Lee [1]
    More than three authors: Kim et al. [1]
    ② Where more than one reference is cited, these should be separated by a comma, for example, [1, 4, 7]. For sequences of consecutive numbers, give the first and last number of the sequence separated by a hyphen, for example, [12-15].
14. (Tables) ① All of the tables shall be written clearly on a separate page while title and content of table shall be written in English. Tables should be self-explanatory and the data they contain must not be duplicated in the text or figures. All of the tables shall be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals in the order in which they are referred to in the text (e.g., Table 1.).
    ② Title of the table shall be placed at the top while only the first letter of the sentence shall be in capital letter. A long word in the table shall be replaced by a proper abbreviation along with definition of the abbreviation under the table.
    ③ Tables should be inserted immediately before the figure legends.
15. (Figures) ① All of the figures or pictures shall be clearly comprehensible on a separate page even after they are reduced to the size of 8×8 cm and are printed out, and title and content of figure should be in English. They shall be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals in the order which they are referred to in the text (e.g., Figure 1.). For figures with more than one panel, panels should be clearly indicated using labels (a), (b), (c), (d), etc. Numbers, letters and symbols used in multi-paneled figures must be consistent.
    ② In regard to title of figure, only the first letter of the sentence shall be in capital letter with a period at the end of the title.
    ③ For graphs, the axes should be clearly labeled with appropriately sized type, and unit of measurement should be given. Equations used to plot lines and curves should be given in the legend or the text. Scales for plotting the data should be marked by short index lines, but every index line needs not to be numbered.
    ④ Legends should be provided on a separate page. Figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript.
16. (Abbreviations) When abbreviation, sample name and symbol used in the text, figure and table are repeated, they shall be defined in the format as shown below only once in the place where they are used for the first time (e.g., polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)). Afterwards, abbreviation shall be used. In Korean abstract and English abstract also, repeated abbreviation shall be defined. However, the repeated abbreviation shall be defined again in the body.
17. (Equations) ① Equations should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals in parentheses on the right-hand side, (e.g., (1), (2), (3), etc.), and are referred to in the text as Equation (1).
    ② Alphabets used for formula shall be all in italics, but common, explicit defined functions (e.g., log, sin, exp, etc.), numbers and subscript in formula shall be written in common type.
18. (Symbols) All symbols contained in the manuscript should be defined immediately, followed by essential descriptive materials as briefly as possible. When more than 10 symbols are used in the text in total, they should be explained at the end of the paper, immediately before the references section.
19. (Units) ① The basic rule is to use SI unit for all types of units. All Units should be using upright format, not italic or bold. In general, space is required before unit. However, no space is required between number and “%.” Time unit includes “s” for second, “min” for minute, “h” for hour, and “yr” for year.
    ② Unnecessarily repeating units are avoided. (e.g., ‘1.3 and 2.6 min.’ rather than ‘1.3 min. and 2.6 min.’)
    ③ Units should be displayed using exponential formatting. Multiplication of units should be indicated by space (e.g., N m) and division by negative exponents (e.g., ms-2).
20. (Space) When there is a parenthesis such as ( ) and [ ] in the text, no space is required before the parenthesis in case of Korean, whereas space is required before the parenthesis in case of English. However, in the example of “Figure 1(a),” no space is required between number and parenthesis. In the example of “wt%,” no space is required between “wt” and “%.” Furthermore, in the example of “A = 25” or “A > 25,” one space is required before and after the sign.
21. (Erratum) ① Erratum is intended to correct errors in the original paper and should not contain updates or other new results. Erratum should also not be written for insignificant or minor corrections such as author affiliation updates or author ordering changes.
    ② The erratum title should begin with the word “Erratum:” followed by the original paper title and end with original paper reference in parentheses. For example, Erratum: “Supercritical Dyeing Technology” (Clean Technol. , 24(1), 1-8 (2018)).
    ③ The original author list and affiliation(s) should be included after the title. Do not include footnotes, key words, or an abstract; the erratum text should begin directly after the author list and affiliation(s).
    ④ Include any new tables or figures that are referenced in the erratum after the text. Note that an erratum is considered as a new submission and will be given a new manuscript number.
22. (Reviewer recommendation) For a rapid and accurate review of submitted paper, a person who submitted the paper may recommend within three persons who are capable of examining paper. Colleagues within the same institution and co-authors within the last three years should not be included in the suggestion. The Journal does not guarantee that the editor will choose to utilize all or even part of any suggested reviewer(s).
23. (Revised manuscript) ① When a manuscript has been judged by the reviewers to be in need of modification, the revised manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter that includes a detailed point-by-point listing as to how each of the reviewers’ and/or editor’s comments has been addressed and describes any other changes made to the manuscript.
    ② If the author does not submit the revised manuscript or request postponement within two months after receiving such notification, it will be assumed that the author does not intend to publish his or her paper in the Journal, and the review process will be finished. If the author submits a revised paper after the 2-month period expires, the submitted paper will be considered as an entirely new paper.
24. (Proofreading) ① At the stage of author proof after acceptance of the manuscript, only the typesetting, editing and completeness of the text, tables and figures are checked and corrected by the author and Manuscript Editors. The changes of author names and acknowledgements are not permitted.
    ② Other significant changes to the article will only be considered at this stage with permission from the Editor-in-Chief. However, changes to the substantive content or scientific results of a paper should be avoided.
25. (Publication date) The “Clean Technology” is published 4 times every year, on March 31, June 30, September 30 and December 31. If the Editor-in-Chief believes it necessary to publish an additional issue, it can be published after an approval is given by the Board of Directors.
26. (Costs) ① After the paper is published, a certain amount of publication fee shall be paid.
    ② In the event that the author wishes to publish his or her paper in the same month of submission (Article 25) or requires a certificate of publication quickly or wishes to publish a prepared manuscript immediately, the author will be required to pay an express publication fee.
    ③ An additional cost will arise for any copies of the publication in excess of the default 20 copy limit.
    ④ No charges apply to the paper if the corresponding author’s affiliation is out of Korea. Depending on the decision of the board of editors, the page charge may be waved. In this case, copies of the publication will not be provided, but free PDF file will be offered.
27. (Copyright) ① Authors are requested to transfer their exclusive copyright interest in the submitted manuscript to the Journal, effective if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The corresponding author(s) can be authorized to sign the copyright transfer form found online on the PS&R System on behalf of all authors.
    ② After the paper is accepted, it shall not be published in Korean or other language in the similar format without any written consent by the KSCT. Authors of papers published in the Journal are permitted to use parts of or all their article without requesting permission from the KSCT in the following situations.
    (1) Reproduce parts of their article including figures and tables, in books, reviews, or subsequent research paper they write;
    (2) Use parts of their article in presentations, including figures and tables downloaded into PowerPoint, etc.;
    (3) Submit a copy of the article to a doctoral candidate's university in support of a doctoral thesis or dissertation;
    (4) Retain patent, trademark and other intellectual property rights.
